“Underground: The World Below”: Daylight School Pays Tribute to Marco Pesaresi

Three black-and-white photographic prints from the "Underground" exhibition on display at Daylight School, a photography school in Rome.
The world below in three shots. From Tokyo to Berlin to Paris: the black-and-white visions of Tatsuo Suzuki, Christian Reister, and Giuseppe Cardoni redefine the urban space of the subway. Now on view at the Daylight School in Rome.

What happens when eighteen different perspectives decide to venture underground to pick up the thread of an interrupted story? On Friday, the 29th , “Underground: The World Below” opened in Rome, a group exhibition created to pay tribute to the vision and work of Marco Pesaresi.

The reception at the opening night at the Daylight School was incredible, proving that documentary and street photography in Rome still have an audience hungry for authentic stories.

The Project: Beyond the Myth of Underground

Curated by Fabio Renzi and Marco Sconocchia, the exhibition does more than simply celebrate the past. The curators asked the participating photographers to set out once again on a journey through the cities featured in Pesaresi’s historic book *Underground*, seeking to capture their atmospheres, contrasts, and the humanity hidden beneath the concrete of contemporary metropolises.

The result is a raw, magnetic, and deeply varied visual journey, where the subway ceases to be merely a place of passage and becomes a stage for stories in limbo.

The highlight of this exhibition is the variety of perspectives it offers. Alongside the curators’ works, the walls of the Daylight School feature photographs by some of the most intriguing names on the Italian and international scene:

Lorenzo Castore, Federico Arcangeli, Tatsuo Suzuki, Fabio Renzi, Giulia Pissagroia, Christian Reister, Aldo Feroce, Giuseppe Cardoni, Diego Bardone, Sunny Quintero, Efi Logginou, Julie Hrudová, Martino Chiti, Michele Corleone, Alex Liverani, F.D. Walker, Héctor Faya, and Marco Sconocchia.
