Daylight School: photography courses in Rome and photography education.

Running a photography school today isn’t enough.
We need to create a context. A voice. A space—both physical and digital—where photography serves as a tool for interpreting reality, rather than just a technique to be learned. It is from this need thatDaylight School,a photography school in Rome, was born—and so was this column.

My name is Marco Sconocchia. I am a photographer, teacher, and founder of Daylight. After ten years of working in Turin, London, and Rome, I felt the need for a project that wasn’t just a course or a workshop, but a true spacefor sharing photography. Something that would focus not only on images, but also on stories, contexts, and contradictions.

What is this column for?

Here, on this blog, we’ll try to do what every school should do:raise questions, suggest paths forward, and explore photography as a living, collective endeavor.
We’lldiscuss urban photography, visual languages, contemporary culture, and why photographing Rome today is as urgent as it is complex.

Daylight School is more than just a school.
It is a vantage point. A laboratory of ideas. A place where photographers—or those who want to learn—can grow alongside others, exchange ideas, and step outside the comfort zone of the “beautiful” image to enter the more fertile territory of the “necessary” image.

In an age when everything is photographed, understanding how and why we take photos ismore important than ever. And that is the question we want to keep open.

This column will be one of the tools we use to achieve that. Through articles, reflections, interviews, and in-depth features, we will strive to build a living archive of our experiences and our visions.

If you're interested in photography—not just as an image, butas a cultural phenomenon—stay tuned.

Welcome.
